Starting a file service
How does a new file service find its first customers?
Your first customers will not come from ads. Where they really come from, what to say to them, and how to make sure the first ones stay and tell others.
In short
First customers usually come from people who already trust you: local workshops, tool sellers, forums and past customers. Offer a clear price and a fast first job, then make sure they can order without ringing you.
Most new file services wait for customers to find them, and most of those customers never do. Tuners buy from people they already trust, so the first ten customers are usually won one at a time.
Who should you approach first?
Start close to home, with the people who see cars every day:
- Local workshops and garages that do not offer tuning at all. They have customers asking for it and nothing to sell them.
- People already fitting files, who may be unhappy with how slow or unreachable their current service is.
- Tool sellers and resellers, who get asked constantly where a new owner should send files.
- Your past customers, who may know the next person.
What do you actually say to them?
Keep it short, and make it about what they lose today. Tell them the cars you know well, how quickly you answer, and what a file costs. Offer to do one file so they can see how it goes. Do not open by explaining your tuning philosophy: they want to know what happens at four o'clock on a Friday when a car is on the ramp.
Where do forums and groups fit in?
They work slowly, and they are worth it. Answer real questions under your real name, without selling, and people will start asking who you are. Most tuning forums have rules about advertising, so read them first. A helpful answer that is still there in three years beats any post that shouts for a week.
Nobody ever chose a file service because of its slogan. They chose the one that answered.
What makes the first customers stay?
The first job decides almost everything. Answer quickly. Get it right. If the customer says it does not feel right, fix it without an argument. Then make the next order easy: when a customer can sign in, upload and pay without talking to you, they will do it at any hour, and you will get the Sunday night file that used to go somewhere else.
How do you look like a real business from the first day?
Your name on everything. A portal at your own address, with your logo on every screen, email and invoice, tells a workshop you are here to stay. It costs you nothing to start with no monthly fee, and your first customer sees your name from the first day.
A clean price list matters too, so they do not need to ask. See how to price a file.
When should you start paying for ads?
After you know what a customer is worth to you and how they prefer to buy. Ads bring people who have never heard of you, so everything else needs to be ready first: your site, your prices, your answers. Until then, your best marketing is the last job you did.
Questions
Should I undercut other file services to get started?
Be careful. A low price brings customers who leave for a lower one, and it is hard to raise later. Answer faster instead.
Do I need a website first?
A portal under your own name is enough to start. You can add a website when you have time for one.
Should I offer a free first file?
One trial file can be a fair way to prove yourself. Just be clear it is a one-off, and put the terms in writing.
